Popular location based social network Foursquare just hit an important milestone reaching 10 million members. New York City based Foursquare was founded in 2009 and since then has been enabling users to check in to establishments and earn rewards for repeat visits. So far, the company received over $21 million in funding.
To celebrate the big milestone, Foursquare published an infographic on the company’s blog on Monday highlighting the social network’s path of growth since its inception and unveiling some interesting stats on the way people have been using the service.
It is interesting to note that today the service has hundred times more members compared to mid-2009 when it reached 100,000 users. Just a year ago Foursquare hit first million users and in May this year the number was up to 9.3 million users. This is an amazing growth for the social networking service which gathered in total 600 million checkins, somewhere around 3 million per day.
“One of the most amazing things about building Foursquare has been seeing a tool we designed for our friends turn into something now used by over 10,000,000 people. And as our community grows larger, we get to build things that start to fulfill our larger vision for the future,” Foursquare said in its infographic.
Today more than 400,000 businesses use Foursquare to connect with customers, and over 10,000 developers build their applications using its API.
The Foursquare infographic offers many interesting facts on the service usage, but particularly interesting are the maps of checkin sentiment in New York, London and Hong Kong showing the level of users’ happiness in locations throughout the three cities.
The infographic also highlights the following facts:
- 358 million checkins have been made outside of the U.S.
- The most popular chains across the US include Old Navy, Bank of America, 7-Eleven, Home Depot and Target.
- 78,387 venue mayors ousted each day.
- New York City Mayor Mike Bloomberg enthroned on Foursquare.
- 1,061 birth announcements on hospital checkins.
