Morten Wabyaombe; his uncle, Kakozi Muzaliwa; and his cousin, Asuma Aoei, have opened Morten Designs, Furniture Creations & Antique Restoration in Rock Island.
The combination design studio/workshop and retail space at 2125 3rd Ave. is located in the Voss Brothers Warehouse. An open house will be held Monday.
Wabyaombe came to the United States in 1999 as a refugee from political persecution in Africa. He arrived in the Quad-Cities as an American citizen in 2010 by way of Arizona and Texas.
He is opening his business with the assistance of the city of Rock Island, Project NOW, Rock Island Neighborhood Partners, the Changing Faces: Refugees & Immigrants in Rock Island organization and Rock Island Housing Authority.
“My life has taken me many places and through many experiences; some tough, some pleasing, but each shaping me for who I am today,” he said in a news release.
Wabyaombe plans to employ others from the local refugee and immigrant community.
