KABZ-FM, 103.7, host Tommy Smith pleaded not guilty to alcohol and drug charges Tuesday in Pulaski County District Court in Little Rock.
Smith’s attorney, Robert Cortinez II of Cortinez Law Firm in Little Rock, called in Smith’s plea on his behalf. Smith did not appear in court.
Smith is scheduled for an Aug. 31 bench trial before Pulaski County District Court Judge Wayne Gruber, who on Tuesday reduced Smith’s possession of a controlled substance charge from a felony to a misdemeanor in court, according to deputy court clerk Sirena Moix.
Smith, who with David Bazzel co-hosts KABZ’s “The Show With No Name,” and charged with driving while under the influence, possession of a controlled substance without a prescription, leaving the scene of an accident, drinking in public and refusing to submit to a chemical test.
The arrest came after Smith, driving a black Dodge Durango pickup, crossed the median at Colonel Glenn and Interstate 430, hit another vehicle and kept driving, according to a police report. A witness followed him until a state trooper stopped Smith at I-630 and Pine Street in Little Rock.
The report said Smith admitted to drinking two pints of liquor and taking Xanax, which the officer found in Smith’s possession.
Last month, Steve Jonsson, KABZ’s vice president and general manager, told that Smith has a job waiting for him once Smith finishes a 30- to 60-day treatment program.
Smith, 57, is a longtime local radio personality whose battles with substance abuse are well known. The May arrest came after that led to Smith’s hospitalization and time in a treatment facility.
