Longtime Arkansas radio host Tommy Smith, who earlier this month to alcohol and drug charges in Pulaski County District Court in Little Rock, was back on the air Thursday morning.

Smith was arrested in May in an apparent hit-and-run incident and charged with driving while under the influence, returned to KABZ-FM, 103.7′s “The Show With No Name” after treatment at a rehabilitation facililty in California.

Following his arrest, Steve Jonsson, vice president and general manager of KABZ, once he finished the 30- to 60-day treatment program.

On Thursday, Smith was joined on-air by his co-host David Bazzel and guests that included Keith Jackson, Rex Nelson and Bruce James, who wished Smith the best.

“I know enough about you as a man to know you’re gonna beat this,” James said, referring to Smith’s stuggle addiction.

 

Smith, 57, is scheduled for an Aug. 31 bench trial before Pulaski County District Court Judge Wayne Gruber, who on July 5 reduced Smith’s possession of a controlled substance charge from a felony to a misdemeanor in court.

Smith and charged with driving while under the influence, possession of a controlled substance without a prescription, leaving the scene of an accident, drinking in public and refusing to submit to a chemical test.

The arrest came after Smith, driving a black Dodge Durango pickup, crossed the median at Colonel Glenn and Interstate 430, hit another vehicle and kept driving, according to a police report. A witness followed him until a state trooper stopped Smith at I-630 and Pine Street in Little Rock.

The report said Smith admitted to drinking two pints of liquor and taking Xanax, which the officer found in Smith’s possession.

Smith’s battles with substance abuse are well known. The May arrest came after that led to Smith’s hospitalization and time in a treatment facility.
